“Do I really need to lift weights to lose fat?”
(And no, you won’t suddenly turn into The Hulk)
If fat loss is on your wish list (and let’s be honest, it often is), you might be wondering…
“Do I really need to lift weights to lose fat?”
Short answer: Yes.
Longer answer: Yes… and it’s one of the smartest things you can do.
At PUSH! Personal Training in Buxton, this is a question we hear all the time – especially from women who’ve spent years thinking cardio is the only way forward. Treadmills, bikes, endless classes… and yet the results never quite stick.
Let’s clear things up.
Fat Loss vs “Toned” – Let’s Get This Straight First
Most people don’t just want to lose fat.
They want to look toned, feel strong, and actually like what they see in the mirror.
That look doesn’t come from fat loss alone.
It comes from:
- Losing body fat
- Building (or keeping) muscle
And muscle is built through… you guessed it… lifting weights.
So if your goal is to feel firm, strong and confident (rather than just “smaller but still wobbly”), resistance training is non-negotiable.
But Doesn’t Cardio Burn More Calories?
Yes.
During the session.
For example, a 30-minute steady cycle might burn more calories than 30 minutes of weight training. That’s true, and we’re absolutely not anti-cardio at PUSH! PT.
In fact, conditioning and cardio absolutely have their place in a fat-loss plan and we programme them regularly for our clients.
But here’s where weight training wins the long game…
1️⃣ Weight Training Builds Muscle (And Muscle Is Greedy)
Muscle is expensive to keep around.
Translation?
Muscle burns calories even when you’re doing absolutely nothing.
Two people can weigh the same, but the one with more muscle will burn more calories all day, every day, simply by existing.
Fat?
Lazy.
Muscle?
Always working.
Even a small increase in muscle mass raises your resting metabolism, which means:
- Easier fat loss
- Better physical shape
- Less chance of regaining weight
And here’s a big one for people in their 40s, 50s and beyond 👇
If you don’t lift weights while trying to lose fat, your body may break down muscle as well as fat.
That’s not what anyone wants.
Weight training protects the muscle you already have while helping you build more. That’s a massive win.
2️⃣ You Keep Burning Calories After You Finish Training
When you lift weights properly (not just pink dumbbells and a prayer), your body works hard to recover afterwards.
This means your metabolism stays elevated for up to 16–38 hours after your session.
In normal human terms:
👉 Your workout keeps working long after you’ve gone home, had your tea and put your feet up.
That’s what we call a smart investment.
Different styles of training create bigger “afterburn” effects – and knowing how to programme this properly is where expert coaching really matters.
Which leads us nicely to…
Why Coaching Matters (Especially If You Hate Gyms)
Trying to figure all of this out on your own can feel overwhelming. Machines you don’t understand, exercises you’re unsure about, and that awkward “am I doing this right?” feeling.
That’s exactly why PUSH! exists.
At PUSH! PT each of our sessions are coach-led from start to finish so you always know what to do, you’re always exercising safely and effectively, and you’re always on the road to reaching your goals. Our coaches care about you, understand you, and are motivated by your goals just as much as you are. Ditch the gymtimidation at the big scary gyms and join a community of like-minded people who care and want success for everyone.
No wandering.
No guessing.
No intimidation.
Just expert coaching, friendly faces, and a lot of laughs along the way.
So… Does Lifting Weights Help You Lose Fat?
Absolutely.
But it works best as part of a well-structured plan that includes:
- Weight training
- Conditioning/cardio
- The right frequency and intensity
- Coaching that adapts as you improve
That’s exactly what we do every day at PUSH! Personal Training in Buxton.
We’ve helped hundreds of local men and women feel stronger, healthier, more confident and finally in control of their fitness – without feeling judged, overwhelmed or out of place.
And yes… we have a lot of fun doing it 😉
If you’re ready to stop guessing and start getting results, you know where we are. 💪
