IS IT NORMAL TO BE SORE AFTER A WORKOUT?

Is It Normal to Be Sore After a Workout?

(And should you be worried if you can’t sit down properly the next day?)

If you’re thinking about starting training — or you’ve just finished your first session and are now questioning every life choice involving stairs – you might be wondering…

“Is this soreness normal?”

Short answer: Yes.
Longer answer: Yes… but it should never feel scary, unbearable, or like you’ve been hit by a bus.

At PUSH! Personal Training in Buxton, this is one of the most common questions we get from new clients – especially women who haven’t exercised in a while or who’ve had a less-than-wonderful gym experience in the past.

So let’s clear things up.

Will I Be Sore After My First Workout?

If you’re new to training (or it’s been a while), some mild muscle soreness is totally normal.

Your body is simply being asked to do things it’s not used to — and it responds with a polite (sometimes less polite) reminder the next day.

The good news?

  • That soreness doesn’t last forever
  • Your body adapts quickly
  • You won’t feel like this after every session

In fact, most people find that after a couple of weeks, soreness becomes much milder, or disappears altogether.

Even Experienced People Get Sore Sometimes

Believe it or not, even regular gym-goers (and yes, even coaches) still get sore from time to time.

This usually happens when:

  • You try a new exercise
  • You increase weight, reps, or intensity
  • You challenge yourself in a new way

That’s normal progress – not punishment.

What isn’t normal is extreme pain, joint pain, or feeling completely wiped out for days on end. That usually comes from poor programming, poor technique… or being left to your own devices in a gym with no clue what to do.

Which is exactly what we don’t do at PUSH!.

Why Do Muscles Get Sore Anyway? (Aka DOMS)

That stiffness you feel is called Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS).

It’s caused by tiny microscopic tears in the muscle tissue. Don’t panic – this is actually part of how your body gets stronger.

Your body repairs those tiny tears and adapts so it can handle that same movement better next time.

In simple terms:
If 10 squats made you sore today, your body adapts so 10 squats won’t feel so dramatic next time.

This is how strength, confidence, and resilience are built.

Soreness ≠ A Good (or Bad) Workout

This is important, so we’ll say it louder for the people at the back:

Being sore does NOT mean the workout was better.
And not being sore does NOT mean it “didn’t work”.

You can make brilliant progress without ever feeling crippling soreness.

A great training programme balances:

  • The right amount of challenge
  • Proper technique
  • Enough recovery
  • Smart progression

And that’s where coaching matters.

Why Coaching Makes All the Difference

At PUSH!, we don’t believe in throwing you into the deep end and hoping for the best.

At PUSH! PT each of our sessions are coach-led from start to finish so you always know what to do, you’re always exercising safely and effectively, and you’re always on the road to reaching your goals. Our coaches care about you, understand you, and are motivated by your goals just as much as you are. Ditch the gymtimidation at the big scary gyms and join a community of like-minded people who care and want success for everyone.

We tailor everything to you — your fitness level, your history, your confidence, and how your body feels week to week.

And yes… we check in with you regularly to make sure soreness stays helpful, not horrific.

Will I Always Get Sore?

Probably not.

As you get fitter and stronger:

  • Your body adapts faster
  • Soreness becomes less frequent
  • Recovery improves

Eventually, you may even ask:
“Shouldn’t I be sore if I’m working hard?”

The answer?
Nope.

Progress isn’t measured by pain. It’s measured by feeling stronger, moving better, and noticing everyday life getting easier.
